Description

Waterfront structures, whether located on the ocean, bays or lakes, are exposed to harsh environmental conditions that can cause deterioration and affect structural integrity, safety, serviceability, and long-term performance. Regular inspections help identify problems early and allow owners and operators to make informed decisions about maintenance, repair, and capital improvements.

This session will introduce ASCE Manual 130, which documents industry standards and best practices for inspecting waterfront structures. Attendees will receive an overview of the different inspection types, including Routine, Structural Repair, New Construction, Baseline, Due Diligence, Special Purpose, Repair Construction, and Post-Event, and when each may be appropriate.

The session will discuss above-water and underwater inspections, the different levels of inspection effort (Levels 1, 2, and 3), and when each is warranted. The presenters will also discuss typical defects found in concrete, timber, or steel elements in waterfront facilities and how to identify them. Particular attention will be given to inspection efforts marina owners and staff could self-perform to identify and document common defects during their day to day operations and when a condition warrants further evaluation by a qualified professional.

Repair and rehabilitation options for waterfront facilities will also be covered with examples of common repairs for some of the various elements discussed the presentation. Examples of repairs that will be discussed are pile jackets and wraps, spall repairs, corrosion mitigation, and monitoring.

Attendees will leave with an introductory understanding of how to inspect, evaluate, and address deterioration in waterfront infrastructure and make informed decisions about extending the useful life of their assets, whether operating a coastal marina or a freshwater lake facility.
